A small town.
A wide-open world.
The Elan Valley, a sky full of red kites, and places worth taking your time over. Start with Nami’s notes, then choose what you’re in the mood for.

Before you set off.
Start in town
Rhayader is the first town on the River Wye, and small enough to explore on foot. The touch-screen information point in the town centre, outside The Old Swan, is a handy first stop for local ideas — little ones love it too.
Elan Valley days
The Elan Valley begins about three miles from town: six Victorian dams, quiet reservoirs, bike hire and walking trails, with the Visitor Centre open every day except Christmas Day. It is an International Dark Sky Park, so a clear night is worth staying up for. Parking charges apply at the Visitor Centre.
Enjoy it responsibly
Please don’t swim or use inflatables in the reservoirs, and no fires or barbecues. Keep dogs on short leads near sheep and cattle, close gates behind you and take litter home. Mountain weather changes quickly, and phone signal can drop in the valleys — pack layers and download maps before you go.
